Band camp is a time to rehearse and train for the 2026-2027 school year, the fall parade competitions, and our 2026 field show to be performed at home games. Most high schools have a 2-3 week long band camp that lasts from 8 am to 5 pm. Then on top of that, they will hold two after-schoolrehearsals during the week once school starts. We have a 6-day band camp from 9 am until 3 pm each day with an hour lunch break. During band camp, we will get to know each other, practice marching basics, learn our drill (formations) for our field show, practice in sections, and practice all together. We'll be learning & memorizing our parade march and field show music. We'll also have some new pep tunes that we'll perform at football games (see events for dates). Band camp is mandatory. This is because we will be spending about 5 hours each day practicing and rehearsing. If a student misses band camp, it's almost like missing 6 weeks of rehearsals during the school year.
In the parade competition, all students will perform as a full band. We will also have the chance to have a competitive drumline performance. The competitive drumline will be separate from the band and meet after school once a week with either Mr. Jacobsen or Mr. Schofield. Band members can be a part of this drumline even if they play a wind instrument. If any students are interested, please email Mr. Jacobsen.
As you can see in the example videos below, bands usually have a color guard or flag team. This is a group of students who have a choreographed part for the parade/field show. They would meet at the same time as the band - Tuesdays 6-8 pm. We want to have a color guard, but we need interested students. If you know a student who would be interested, please have them contact Mr. Jacobsen.
This year we'll need quite a few parent volunteers. We have 26 students in the band this year and we'll have 2 competitions and many concerts. I am always looking for parents who are willing to help. If you're interested in helping, please let me know. This year we will need help at each competition, each football game, and we will need a lot of help with uniforms - organizing, fitting students, caring, maintaining, transporting, etc.

To celebrate the work the students put into Band Camp, we will hold a preview concert on August 19th, 2026. The performance will take place at the GHS stadium and we will perform our competitive march, pep band songs, and our field show (as far as we have learned). We will also demonstrate basic marching techniques and commands to demonstrate what we have learned.
The Marching Band and Color Guard will rehearse every Tuesday evening on the GHS Football Field from 6 pm - 8 pm. These night rehearsals will go from the first week of school until the week of our last football game performance. Attendance will be mandatory and any absences will need to be approved beforehand.
